Night Watcher
No rest. I lie awake.
A twig snaps, a footfall brakes.
My smartphone glows a feeble light.
No comfort without rest from fright.
I seek a way to make friends
A click away to ease the ache
Of fear and danger in the night.
Time of mental lack and blight.
I close my eyes but quickly wake.
One eye to watch, one closed to fake.
I know it’s there out of sight.
Must I flee or stay to fight?
